Podcast - Episode 2 - Canada!

Happy Canada Day! And if you aren't Canadian, happy new comic book day!

It's like i'm looking out my window!

This week Dave and I discuss the mountain of comic news and gossip that came out in the last week or so, including a director for Black Panther, a new Dr Strange book from Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo, and a DC casting switcharoo for professional dreamboat, Chris Pine. 

We also talk about the first issue of Brian K Vaughan and Steve Skroce's new comic, We Stand on Guard, and discuss our favourite Canadian comic book characters and creators. We barely scratch the surface, really, but it's still a fun talk! Apologies to the zillions of Canadian comic creators who don't get mentioned. We mention, like, three.

Amazing True Life Facts!

I was just hanging out with some folks and the Czech student who is staying with my friend told us this amazing fact: in the Czech Republic (or at least the part that she went to school in), practical jokes are called Canadian jokes.

I have no idea of the etymology or anything like that, but I have never felt more patriotic in my life.

Doctor Doom Takes Off to the Great White North.

Why has Doctor Doom come to Canada?

a) To demand that Rush add Latverian dates to their latest tour;
b) To meet his favourite Degrassi character (Wheels);
c) To stock up on Clone High DVDs;
d) Ketchup chips

Alright, it's none of the above. It's actually because he's thirsty.

Well that seems reasonable. But of course he completely ruins everything by doing something evil.

I was inspired to post these panels from ALPHA FLIGHT #91 mainly because of this page, which I think is a fine example of diplomacy that I think the G-20 leaders could learn something from.

"And if they are not available, VICTOR VON DOOM demands that it be Bret 'The Hitman' Hart. DOOM would also not mind some maple-smoked bacon."

How awesome do you have to be to get that sort of lightshow happening when you talk?

2009 Shuster Awards Nominees Announced!

The nominees for the 2009 Joe Shuster Awards for Canadian Comic Book Creators were announced today! The full list of nominees can be viewed on the official website here.

Among the nominees are our local pals Darwyn Cooke (best cartoonist, best writer, best cover art), Steve McNiven (best artist, best cover art) and Faith Erin Hicks (best cartoonist)! Yay! Also, Dave's buddy on the other side of the country, Steve Rolston, was nominated for best artist!

Sadly, local cartoonist Ray Fenwick failed to get a nomination for his amazing collection, Hall of Best Knowledge (Fantagraphics). Also, J. Bone not being recognized for his awesome cover work on Super Friends is just insane. One look at the list of nominees tells you how much comic book talent we have here in Canada, and you should see who didn't make the cut! We are overflowing with talent from sea to frigid sea!

This was my second year on the panel of judges(?) to pick the shortlist, and it's something I love to be a part of. The winners will be announced in Toronto on June 27th (I believe at a ceremony that is part of the Toronto ComicCon?).
